//c ROM Upgrade?

I've got two //c's. One is the original, pre-Unidisk model; it has
apparently never been upgraded. The other is the later model with a
memory expansion slot on the motherboard. The newer machine was fried
when someone incorrectly connected a Disk II to it -- it seems to work
with write protected disks, but destroys writeable disks when it tries
to access them.
I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the older machine
using ROM's, etc. from the dead //c. Is this even remotely feasible?
I'd like to be able to use 3.5" disks with the working //c...
On a related note, how can I tell whether the old //c works with
high speed (ie, greater than 1200 bps) modems?
