Re: (no subject)
Hello,
Yes, there are still some Apple IIe users out there. I'm one of
them! :)
Yes there still sources for hardware and software. At the moment
I believe Quality Computers still does, though their prices are a bit
high. There are other commericial places as well. I don't know all of
them off of the top of my head, but try checking the FAQ which is around
somewhere (can't remember where to get it.)
Here's some things you'll need to get to the Internet with your
IIe. You didn't mention if you're IIe is enhanced or not. To check,
boot your IIe up. Check what is shown while the IIe is booting. If it
says: Apple ][ then it is not enhanced. If it says Apple //e, then you
will not need the enhancement. (Actually just thought of a place for you
to get everything you might need, get to that in a moment.) Once that's
done, you'll need a Super Serial Card and a Cable. Those are musts to
connect your IIe to a modem. I don't know what is a reasonable speed for
you (I'm running at 2400), but all modems should work with the IIe
including 14,400 modems. I'm not sure about 28,800 modems. I remember
someone mentioning that IIe may not be able to handle a 28,800 modem.
After all of this, you'll need some communications software.
Proterm is the best (and the only commericial one) for the IIe. It'll
cost you about 80-90 bucks from Quality Computers or InTrec Software
which produces Proterm.
If you want a cheaper solution, try posting a message to Chuck
Orem, or check around comp.sys.apple2 for his email address. For a few
bucks he'll send you a disk with some shareware and freeware
communications programs. I'm using one of them, Zlink, which is pretty
good for me.
As for sources of hardware and software again,
comp.sys.apple2.marketplace is good for used stuff. You see a lot of
people selling stuff. The place I remembered was, A+ Techologies. They
sell a lot of used Apple II hardware and software. Haven's seen them
post in the newsgroups in a while, but try calling 1-800-2APPLE2. they
should have most if not all of what you need (the enhancement kit, Super
Serial Card, and cables)
Good Luck!
-Don
