sometimes can't load files saved on a data disk. I've tried the simple
things such as reading the disk on another computer, copying the files
to another disk with Copy // Plus, etc. to no avail. Is there anything

In some cases I used the editor of a telecomm program like Proterm or
Ansiterm which had no trouble loading the file and segmented the file into
smaller pieces and saved them. Usually you can then load all segmentgs with
AppleWorks except one segment which had the error.
You can then segment the culprit again into smaller pieces etc.
