When using a parallel printer, there are four possible sources for
adding line feeds.

1. The printer itself may have a DIP switch which enables an automatic
   "add line feed after carriage return" feature.

2. There is a signal on the parallel interface called "AUTO FEED XT".  If
   this signal is active, the printer will add a line feed after each
   carriage return.  This signal is driven by the interface card, but might
   not be connected on most Apple II printer cards.

3. The firmware in the printer card may have an option for adding a line
   feed after each carriage return.

4. The software may be adding line feeds itself.


What you normally need to do is to set all of these methods up so that
ONE line feed is generated in the right circumstances.

What other software are you using with the card?  When you print text,
I assume it is NOT double-spaced?

If so, the problem is likely to be that you have either the parallel
card or the printer set to add line feeds.  Your other programs (for
text printing) are not adding line feeds, but Publish-It! is.  This
results in the double-spacing you are seeing.

The obvious solution is to tell Publish-It! not to generate line
feeds, but I don't know if that is possible.

The next solution would be to recongigure the card/printer to NOT add
line feeds, and set up your other programs to add them (this is easy in
AppleWorks, highly variable for others).
