RPG's w/out graphics were played on mainframes at colleges from at least the
mid 70's.
 
That's when I first found them. you'd have to find someone even older than me to
give you more informatiom. They tended all to deal with D&D type stuf back then.
I usualy played "star trek" myself. What I played was later ported to the
gs w'some nice graphics and sound, but the gs version's author's name
escapes me right now...
