I strongly recommend one of two programs, both available free. The most user
friendly is FrEdWriter, which is basically a clone of the AppleWorks 2.x word
processor module (same interface, commands, etc.) Documentation is included on 
disk. 

The second is the venerable and powerful (but more demanding to the user)
AppleWriter //e, v2.1 which was released for free distribution (_not_ into the 
public domain) a couple of years ago. The manuals were _not_ released, and the 
program almost requires some sort of documentation. 

I have both available, and will send either on 5.25" disks if you will email
your address.
