There is a serious limit, yes, and it's both in hardware _and_
software:

- 64k DP/stack space. This will be the big one. You could create a
compiler that used a "fake" stack and just held a pointer to that on
the DP ... it would be slow but it would work
- No MMU. X with just 8MB of RAM is not really feasible without some
kind of swap space. Worse if the user only has 4MB of RAM.

You could get round these limitations ... so, I'd say X isn't
impossible, but it's highly impractical.
