Do you have the right 3.5" drive? You must have a UniDisk 3.5, not an
Apple 3.5 Drive.
Check the IIc ROM version, by getting into BASIC and typing
PRINT PEEK(64447)
If it says 255, then you have the original ROM version, and need an
upgrade to be able to use a 3.5" drive. If it says 0, 3 or 4, then it
already has the right ROM version, and the problem is elswhere (wrong
drive type, or you may have the drives connected in the wrong order -
the UniDisk 3.5 must go before any external 5.25" drive you have
connected).
If you do have the original ROM, you may still be able to get a free
upgrade from Apple. Back in the old days they required proof of
ownership of a UniDisk 3.5 before you could get the upgrade for free.
If all else fails, you should be able to buy a ROM upgrade from
Alltech Electronics. Installing the ROM yourself is rather tricky,
especially if you haven't opened up the IIc before. A minor
modification is required on the motherboard (cutting a track and
soldering across another position, both of which are labelled).
