re. PS "POP" ...
Almost certainly, the POP was an electrolytic capacitor blowing. Just
open up the supply and look for a messed-up cap-- the signs may be pretty
spectacular or just a dis-coloration near a cap on the circuit board. (You
can also sniff around; blown caps leave a noticable odor.) Replace the
cap.
