We reviewed KOL a few years ago in COMPUTIST. According to the Player
Reference Card, you must first format a ProDOS diskette with the name
/CHARS.

During startup you will eventually get to a Table of Contents display
showing several options. Select option 4: Install New Region. Insert disk
A1 and follow directions. (Press ESC for disks S1, B1, etc.) You will
then be asked to insert the /CHARS disk and disk A4 alternatively in order
to copy files from A4 to the /CHARS disk.

Now, with /CHARS inserted in a drive, you can select option 5:
Character Options and begin creating characters. You can have up to six
characters in your party.
