Ack! The first thing I'd do is get a real telecomm package. The telecomm
module of AppleWorks GS (published by Claris) leaves much to be desired.
Spectrum from Seven Hills, ProTERM from Intrec, and ANSI Term from Parkhurst
are still readily available and well worth the cost in terms of frustration
saved. Next, make sure the modem works. A 1200 baud modem has gotta be old.
Alltech has 2400 and 14,400 baud modems pretty cheap. Check the control panel
and be sure the slot (probably #2) is set to Modem Port. Beyond that,
assuming the cable's okay, he may have a bad port (unlikely, but it happens).
Try switching to the printer port (set the control panel so slot #1 is set to
Modem Port to change its function).
