I wouldn't say absolutely required, I have a Canadian Apple IIe
which originally had the split video ROM (half US version, other half
local French character version) with the language switch underneath the
keyboard. I've succesfully Enhanced this system using a chipset extracted
from a US IIe. It works fine, expect of course if you flip the switch this
will the cause the screen to go blank, yet with no ill affects as far as I
can tell (makes a nice manual screen-saver though ;-).
I also replaced the keyboard ROM for good measure, although I don't
think that was really necessary. The drawback of course is I no longer have
the "local" character set (which I don't use in any case); a fair trade off
considering I can now run ProTERM, ShrinkIt and most other current software
on this IIe.
