Help! Apple II Emulation : Loading Binaries

I've downloaded the Apple IIe Emulator for Windows 3.1x, Win 95, Win NT and
checked the associated .HLP files and read assorted FAQ's. I don't have an 
Apple II anymore and am assuming it is possible to simply download image files 
from various FTP sites and run those .DSK files on my PC. When I try to do so, 
it does not recognise the format; said files vary in length.I'm downloading 
files from ftp.asimov.net and have tried progs such as Archon and Galactic 
Commander, but to no avail... Is there any form of decode process required 
beyond simply downloading the files, or am I missing something blindingly 
obvious.........
