I've been using a Mac 3.5" drive with a IIGS. It is a newer 800K drive
with the light colored case and an additional female connector behind a
removable door in the back of the drive. To make things more complicated,
the 800K drive that was in there was replaced by a 1.4M drive out of a
Mac IIci. It works fine as a 1.4M external drive on a Mac, but it won't
recognise a 1.4M disk when used with a IIGS. I haven't used a IIGS
enougth to know if I'm doing something wrong though, but I guess you
have at least one answer that it will work at least as an 800K drive.
(and it didn't smoke when I plugged it in. :-)
