Wonko,
There is a GS version of Wolfenstein 3D in existance. I have it. It was done by
Burgerbill a while back, and Vitesse is still taking pre-orders for it, I
think. It's running pretty well, but a few features need work. Bill was demoing
it at Kfest, but I'm not sure if he's ever going to get around to finishing it.
I'm begging for it too, and some of the guys at Apogee software are GS users
and were really surprised when they found out about it... especially Tom Hall,
who used to write "G-Essence" for Softdisk GS magazine, which I consider the
most entertaining Apple II column of all time.
As for the Doom GS engine:
Hmm. The .WAD file, or the file where all the textures and sound are mashed is
pretty universal (you can use the same WAD on anything from an Irix Indigo
Extreme to a Mac to a Unix)so the real challenge would be writing the actual
thinger that interprets the wad and plays the game. Another big problem is that
the registered WAD is around 8 megs in size, and we'd need a proprietary
program to ship it on floppies and recreate the one file on a hard drive...
I'm not sure how closely guarded id software keeps their source code, but with
a bit of work I'm sure that Doom GS would be a definite possibility. But only
if the second sight has hardware graphic effects -- are their chips which
handle rotation, scaling, and such? Without these we'd have a slooooow Doom...
slower than the Mac maybe.
And don't forget that in a press release from id, they state:
Doom will never be available for:
1. The TRS-80.
2. The Apple IIgs.
Gee, makes me feel all fuzzy inside seeing my beloved GS getting compared to a
toaster with a keyboard. Oh well. The guys at id used to be GS guys, maybe
they'd let it happen anyway.
Hmm... I'm rambling again. Sorry, won't let it happen again.
Colin
