It's the formatting software provided by La Cie for the hard disks they sell.
Mac formatting software is more complicated since it has to place the device
driver in a partition on the drive and typically several types of devices
are supported such as syquests, magneto opticals, etc. Then you have SCSI
manager 4.3 compatibility to worry about these days as well. I use either 
Apple's HDSC setup or APS powertools and have no trouble with either. I used
Transoft SCSI director to partition my 105 mb into a 32 mb volume and a 70 mb
or so volume on the Mac. Then I put it on the IIgs and erased the 32 mb and
turned it into a ProDOS volume. Then I put all my normal boot stuff and ProDOS
8 stuff there. Now I can put the disk on the Mac and the 70 mb HFS volume
shows up but the ProDOS one does not. No prob though since I only do that to
run Norton on the HFS volume. I've heard that you have to make sure that
the device driver on your drive can recognize partitions with names other
than apple_HFS as disk volumes. I understand that Apple HDSC setup installs
such a driver but it only works with Apple supplied drives unless it's patched.
