Well, it's a tough call between Softalk and Nibble.  But Softalk was a
great magazine if for no reason than that it got beyond the nuts and bolts
of reviews and programming columns, and did feature articles about
actually using you ][ in real life; looking at how the ]['s were
invaluable to so many people.  In fact, I think there was even a fiction
feature from time to time.  It was kind of the "New Yorker" of computer
magazines.

It was actually not a free publication, but they had some deal worked out
where any Apple ][ owner could get a 1 yr. free subscription by submitting
his computer's serial number.

Lest I forget, I should also mention the REALLY nice thing about Softalk. 
The various columns were written by people whose "day-jobs" were not all
"writer for Softalk."  Instead, columns were written by such Apple ][
programming titans as Tom Weishaar, Bill Budge, Bert Kersey, and others
who made their livings supporting the Apple ][.

And don't forget about the monthly contest!
