I think it assumes you have a joystick.  Press K or Ctrl-K to go into keyboard mode.
You should hear a short 'click' from the speaker.

The keys are 
Q,A,Z - punch hi,middle,lo 
W,S,X - kick  hi,middle,lo
space - stand up/assume fighting stance (toggle)
right arrow - walk/run

I think that's right...
