It walks when in fighting stance and runs when not.  Also, left arrow
will walk you backwards only in fighting stance.  A tap on an arrow
key shuffles you forward or back while holding it down will make you
walk in larger steps.  There's only one speed of running.

There is one other command.  I believe <return> will make you bow when
standing.  Any enemy not in a fighting stance will bow in return, except
the very last person you meet.

Don't forget to try booting the backside of the disk!
