   Did you connect the mouse up to the Joystick port in the back of
the //e? The joystick connector is the horizontal 9-pin connector at
the bottom of the back (same row as the monitor's connector). The mouse
connector requires a mouse card, and the connector is usually vertical
in about the middle of the case. 

   When we had a mouse on our //e some years back, I seem to recall
that plugging the mouse into the Joystick port would do something like
what you described. Basically, no matter what commands you do with
software, if you turn off your //e for a minute or so, all effects
will vanish, unless it's a hardware problem. Turn off your //e,
check the connector, and boot into basic. If solid apple still mucks
up your system, there's some kind of hardware problem.
