Call Quality computers and ask for SuperPatch for AppleWorks 3.0. In
addition to a huge number of really great patches there is a driver
for the DeskJet 500 which others have said is the same as the 540 from
an AppleWorks standpoint. (These patches are not separate drivers as
such. Rather, your SEG.ER is overwritten with the needed data.)
I have SuperPatch and really liked it and found that the quality of
the printout using "P1" from the oa-O menu real close to the 300 DPI
laserjet printers at work.
All and all I'd like to sing the praises of AppleWorks 5.0.1 in lieu
of AppleWorks 3.0 if you have the memory to support it. (256K min, 512
or more recommended.) Most of the "needed" patches from SuperPatch are
included. In addition, the RFP (Randy's Free Patcher) program that is
included with 5.0 provides the one crucial patch - oa-S saves to the
original path and oa-Ctrl-S saves to the current path.

Don't think so. It is built into 5.0 as an option and a TO
application, which is somewhat confusing until you figure it out.
