apple//c configuring serial ports! Help!

Help....
just aquired and apple2c and want to hook an extrenal modem to it. However
the serial ports pin need to be configured everytime for the modem...is 
this correct. At least that is what it sounds like from the manual.

anyway in the manual it says to config the port, using systems disk, ok I 
do this. Next it says to replace sys disk w/ program disk and hit 
OA-cnt-reset to run the drive, sacing the pin config in ram.

everytime I do this it seems as if the pins have reset back to the 
normal, not allowing my modem to respond!

any ideas...can I permetly set the serial port so as I dont have to set 
the serial port by loading up the util disk first? Then I wouldn't have to
even try that switching and OA=reset crap!
