Two software packages that I have used both have mouse text capabilities,
they are Metal abd GBBS. Both support mouse text. Metal has capabilities
to map your PSE to ANSI so that things will look similar both in ANSI and
PSE. GBBS does not have this capability.
: 2) Id like the BBS software to support a 14.4k modem.
Both GBBS and Metal support this speed. I know for a fact that metal
supporets quite well speeds of 28.8k+. GBBS supports 16.8k hst and
possibly other speeds such as 28.8k but you will proably need to purchase
drivers from Paul Parkhust. I am not sure if ACOS/GBBS can supports
proper speed result codes ect with the standard modem drivers.
: 3) A BBS used to be run here in Perth using GBBS Pro.... is this software
: good ???
Well, thats a matter of personal opinion. I have used both ACOS/GBBS and
Metal. I personally perfer Metal, its more advanded then GBBS/ACOS and
has a lot more programing flexibility over GBBS/ACOS. One example is the
use of arrays.
Other comarsions, Metal/Futurevision has fully working internet email
and news feeds from csa2 and other Usenet newsgroups. You can post and
they will go out on the net. As far as >I< know and last I checked, GBBS
does not have internet email capabilities (if it does they do post the
details).
Other factors to consider are cost of software. Metal is 100% FREE where
GBBS/ACOS will cost you no less then $130.00 bucks or so. They are no
under new ownership so you may want to ask Steve the owner of GBBS/ACOS for
the current price, it may be cheaper.
Over all both GBBS/ACOS and Metal/FV are your two best choices (IMHO).
Both have pros and cons. As you can proably tell I am all for Metal over
GBBS but that is my persomal opinion. Others perfer GBBS/ACOS.
: PS. What is the best COMMS software for the //gs ?? I need something with
: a faithfull Vt100 emulation....
Well again IMHO I perfer ProTERM over AnsiTERM. I do not have AnsiTERM
BUT I have played with it and its not quite as fast as ProTerm. What I do
not like about ANSITerm is the fact that it dumps things to buffers
before it dumps to the screen but oh well, that is another story:)
