Sounds like your GS had the ROM upgrade, so you need not worry
about it. Original ROMs will not handle GS/OS, and then previously the
ROM upgrades were free. So most likely the previous owners upgraded it.

Yes, it is possible to run System 6 on ROM 01 machines, but you
need at least 1 Mb of memory to run a bare System 6. Recommended to have
2 Mb of memory and harddisk.
