No, you were quite correct. The original ROM just says "Apple IIgs"
at the top of the screen. Later versions also have three lines at the
bottom with copyright and version information.
ROM version 01 or 3 is required to run GS/OS (System 4.0 or later).
Regarding the note about "Woz" IIgses in the FAQ, it is certainly true
that all "Woz" IIgses were originally ROM 0 machines, but most will
have been upgraded to ROM 1.
Note that ROM version 3 isn't an "upgrade" - to use it in an original
IIgs requires swapping the whole motherboard. There isn't very much
gained from this, apart from some minor (but nice) features, and 896K
more RAM. Most of the features of the ROM 3 are new toolbox versions,
and they are available on the ROM 1 by using System 5.0 or later.
