Subject: Apple IIgs Upgrade 

 I want to run System 6.0.1 on my Apple IIgs.
 My logic board has ROM (342-0077- A) and VGC (343S-0046-1).  The ROM is in
a
 socket, but the VGC is soldered to the board.
 When I boot the system disk, I get the message that I need a ROM upgrade,
 so I took it into a local Apple dealer today, to get the FREE upgrade of
the
 ROM and the VGC.
 
 I was told it was no longer available FREE.
 Is this true?
 If not what is the "magic number" that I should tell them to refer to
about
 this?
 
 I have several Apple IIgs machines (the others are already upgraded).
 They all have the ROM (342-0077-B) and a socketed VGC with various part
 numbers (344S-0046-2, 344S-0046-3, 344S-0046- C).
 How do the VGC chips differ?
 
 I am wondering if I could just upgrade the ROM only (myself), by copying
the
 code from one of my other ROMs and "burning" it into a EPROM.
 What EPROM would I use?
 I suspect a 27256, but I am NOT sure.
 Does anyone know?
 Would this allow me to run System 6.0.1?
 I can't change the VGC since it is soldered to the board.
