Kensington System Saver?

Over the past few months, I've seen many posts in the marketplace for 
Kensington Systems savers. I'm currently setting up a IIgs system for my 
son and wondered if this is a necessity or more of a nicety? I've heard 
of burn outs on the IIgs power systems and wondered if this is why the 
system savers are popular or is it just convenience.
