Re: IIgs -- how to access the WEB!!!????
I thought I'd posted this answer before but it seems to have vanished.
On my Unix internet provider, all I have to do is to enter "lynx" on the
command line, i.e. at the "$" prompt, and I am running a www character
based program. Of course, the Apple IIgs graphics are not powerful
enough for the web graphics, so we only get the character-based version.
I've read variously that the Apple IIgs graphics can't support Mosaic or
Netscape (gui www programs), and that someone's working on the problem.
I don't know. I'm still learning to use www myself.
The hyperlinks appear in reverse video, although apparently other text
can, too. The active link, that is the hypertext under the cursor, is
supposed to be distinguishable from the other hyperlinks, so that one
could know which link one was choosing. However, on my Apple IIgs, they
all looked the same.
If one chooses options ("O" at the bottom of the screen), if I remember
correctly, one then gets the options screen where one can set one's
parameters for lynx. If you choose on the next to the bottom line on the
options screen the option to numerically distinguish the hyerlinks (I
forget the wording), you will note, when you exit, that each link is
preceded by a number. If you enter that number, you have chosen that
link. When I first did this, the screens above (that is before) the
screen from which I entered the options screen didn't seem to show the
numbers, but the next time I ran lynx the numbers showed before all links.
It also helps if you know that you can advance to the next screen
sequentially by entering the space bar, go back up one screen by hitting
the "-" (dash) key, and exit a link (i.e. go back to the screen before
you linked) with the left-arrow key.
I hope this will all be clearer once you are actually in lynx and see the
options screen.
