Basically, TCP/IP is a communications protocol formulated years ago 
by the DoD to allow dissimilar computers to talk to each other.  It 
is probably the most widely adopted communications standard in the 
world.  The ISO's OSI stack was formulated to do the same thing on 
an international basis, but not enough people have adopted it to make 
it worth discussing unless you're going after government contracts.

As to why it is important for the IIgs... ??? It opens to the door to 
many opportunities that are unavailable any other way.  If we want to 
keep our IIgs's a useful part of our lives for years to come, we need 
to keep advancing its capabilities.
