You may have a Rev A daisy chain board in the 800K drive.. if so, it wont
work with another 3.5" drive without a conflict. Apple had and SRO exchange
for that one, but I'm pretty sure that it's expired by now. 

If you disassemble the drive, remove the daisychain PCB and look at the
Sony chip solded to the bottom, check it's part # for the ending, A or B.
If it's an A well then...  That problem was discovered in early '87 
and didn't effect all drives, but by then a rather large number of them
had been all over the distribution channels and been sold to end users
allready. It doesn't allways happen either.

Choices for fixing it now, unless a dealer will still swap the board,
you can find a GS user with a single drive that has a Rev B board...
Plead and beg with some Ice Cream or something... to swap the board :)

It does not effect the performance of the drive at all.
