Boy, this is a jog down memory lane... (I don't have a IIgs anymore.)

Anyway, the problem is a combination of a bug/design flaw in the Manager and a
new feature of System 6.0.1 (not in 6.0.0). When 6.0.1 draws a file dialog, it
sends a IPC (inter-program communication) event each time it draws an icon, so
that programs like MoreIcons (by Softdisk Publishing) can add extra kinds of
icons to these dialogs. (I think it's called an IPC event, I sorta forget - I
do remember that it was related to IPC somehow and that it was something kinda
like AppleEvents on the Mac that I'm using as I type this.)

The Manager has a bug (or design flaw, depending on how you see things) - it's
slow at IPC. This is not normally a problem (IPC events aren't usually sent by
programs too often, if I remember correctly), but with the dialogs, there are
a lot of events flying around and things slow down to a crawl. The workarounds
are to stop using the Manager or to switch back to System 6.0, but then you
get the bugs that are in 6.0 and you also lose compatibility with programs
like MoreIcons.
