The grey 5.25 drive's official name is "Apple 5.25 Drive". So the question is
why did Apple switch to the grey 5.25 design from the Disk II. I like the looks
of the grey kind better and have had no problem with the eject mechanism on
them. It seems bothersome now to me to push the disk in and close the door,
then open it and pull the disk out. I like the grey one's push the door in and
the disk pops out setup. Plus the drives are smaller and plastic, and are grey
like a IIgs. Another great improvement is the ease of connecting/disconnecting
the drives, and also the daisychainability required by the //c and IIgs.
Actually the grey 5.25 is the exact same unit as the beige colored Unidisk,
but I imagine that there are far more of the grey Apple 5.25 Drive than the
beige Unidisk.
