Apple IIC Printer Problem... HELP!

I'm not familiar with Apple, but am posting this at request of a friend...
He advises that he uses an Apple IIC running Appleworks and all of a
sudden all he can get out of the printer is garbage.
He's relatively unfamiliar with computer operation, but says he has gone
thru the manual for both the printer & computer, checked the printer
config, but still has a problem.  Any further suggestions I can pass
along to him will be appreciated.  Thanks, Troy
