Re: Maxing out a IIe, what can be done?

A lot, although if you're wanting to really "push the envelope", I'd start
off with a more powerful Apple II, the IIGS. You should be able to
pick one up for under $100 easily. I just got a nice ROM 01 for $40
including shipping :)

14+Mhz is what some really nice GSs are running at (Hi Gabe & Matt :) ).
I believe the fastest IIe Zip Chip was 8Mhz, and maybe RocketChip doubled
their original 5Mhz chip to 10Mhz.
ZIP Is no longer called ZIP Technology, They are called
MCTA

Culver City, CA. 90230

Again, look around on csa2.marketplace. The going rate for used Zips
looks to be about $100-$150. Coitus Interruptus on The Micro Exchange
(714) 992-4520 was upgrading Zips to 14Mhz/64k and also selling them.

You may use almost any SCSI drive with an Apple SCSI card (there's an
older one and a newer "High Speed DMA" card) or RamFAST SCSI card.
The RamFAST is noticably faster (especially in ProDOS 8), but the
newest version is GS only.

On a whim yesterday, I was able to do the same. I hooked my GS up to my
roomie's Mac Performa 636CD, and connected to it with AppleShare. Then
I defined his Hard Drive as a volume in Metal/FutureVision (the _best_
BBS package for the Apple II IMHO). It worked! Although a question
for you Metal/FV guru's: every time it accessed his drive, there was
a faint clicking sound coming from my speaker. ???
I didn't try and download something from a third computer, but now
that I think about it, that might not have worked or at least been
very fast, since it would have had to read the data at 57.6k, only 4
times faster than it was sending it (LocalTalk). Maybe you could write
a routine in Moses to copy the batched file to a scratch area on the
local hard drive (or maybe even ram)...
To do something like this on a IIe, you'd need a Workstation card.
These might cost more than a GS, I have no idea.
>How much would this cost me?
GS: $100
Monitor: $ 75
Keyboard/mouse: $ 40
Zip: $125
4MB RAM: $ 75
RamFAST/Appl SCSI card: $ 75
540MB Hard Disk: $250
Note I've been extremely generous on those prices. I bet if you looked
hard enough, you could get it all for a lot less. Many people are
selling their entire systems for very low prices ($300-$500).

I used to have an Apple //c (1Mhz/128k/5.25" drive) and my GS is so much
nicer...(8Mhz, 2MB RAM, 200MB HD).

I know the Super Serial Card can do 19200 easily, so a 14.4k modem is
fine. If your IIe can keep up with data at that rate is a different
thing. If you don't already have ProTERM v3.1, call up InTrec or
Quality Computers (800) 777-3642 and order it immediately.
>Again, I have heard talk of modems speeds going up the 54,000.

That's 57.6k, and without modifications, your Super Serial Card won't
go faster than 19200. A GS can do 57.6k no problem. I believe
Mr. Empson has said that you could do some serious programming to
push the GS to do 230.4k, but that's a different story for a different
night. Please feel free to drop me a line with any questions you have
about any of this. It's 2:30am so I'm not completely coherent :)
