Don't forget that you can achieve much more agressive optimization in
FORTRAN than in C, so it's still the preferred language for numerical
codes. The company for which I work, Myrias, provides software to do
parallel supercomputing over networked workstations. There are just
two supported languages, C and FORTRAN, and they are equally popular.
