Apple IIGS

My first experience with an Apple IIGS was in 1986. This was also my 
first experience with a computer of any sort! Anyway, I remember sitting 
at the computer for 4-5 hours at a time or longer if the library staff 
didn't kick me off! That Apple IIGS impressed so much, I wanted to buy 
one, however, funds were much tighter than. So, here I am, a Macintosh 
user who wants to get an Apple IIGS again! My question to anyone is: How 
does an Apple IIGS compare (in speed, RAM, etc.) to the early Macs such 
as Mac 128k, Mac 512k, Mac Plus or the Mac SE? If anyone knows this info,
