There's a way - get a ROM 3.

I doubt Apple bothers to test stuff with ROM 01s any more. They may not with
ROM 3s even. Since the ADB controller in ROM 3s are completely redesigned and
there is more ROM space, I'd say the chances of getting new devices to work
are much better.

If you wander into the misc.forsale.computers.mac groups you might find an
extended keyboard II for sale. Aside from the lights these work with ROM 01s.
