Maxtor HD & Sys 6.0.1 problems

I recently acquired a 203mb Maxtor HD that I am using with a RamFAST Rev
C in my ROM 3 GS, and it just acted in a way that concerns me:  the
sound of the drive spinning changed abruptly at the same time a kind of
chipring sound was made..  everything in the drive case seemed to slow
down and power 1/2 off for 15 seconds.  I thought at first that the
drive was damaged.  Then I recalled tonight that while Using System
6.0.1 to copy 3.5 disks into partitons, I kept getting system error $40
which is an invalid filename error.

Does anyone know what is going on?  Should I not be using this drive
with my GS?  The ROM on the SCSI card is v3.01e, and I have the drive
divided up into 9 ProDOS 8 partitions.  Thanks for any help.
