Re: Quality
This guy only proves that even in the world of computing there are
jerks that will go out of their way to hurt people and think they've
accomplished something in the process! Amazing.
The most important thing to be said about the Apple II is that is the
computer that changed the world and made the IBM possible, including all
the slots into which special cards could be plugged.
In the late 70's I was in the school market educational supplemental
materials business, filmstrip in particular, and saw the computer
coming. We surveyed the market an as many of you will recall, it
included such things as Ohio Scientific, various CP/M machines, Tandy,
Texas Instruments, some wierd thing from BBC (UK), Commodore and perhaps
a few others, but there in the middle of all it stood Apple like a new
mushroom glistening in the rain. We saw it, we ran it, we ran with it
and our first project, a series of educational filmstrips about the Apple
II and how to use it, cleaned up! We owned the market because everyone
else made films about all the various kinds of computers, failing to see
that this was a war and one would win. We put our money on the Apple II
and we won until John Sculley, the seven million dollar per year man,
came along and blew the dream at the point where Apple had penetrated
only eight percent of the school market! A two billion dollar a year
business went down the toilet and "John" is "hangin' with Hillary."
Many of us know that we have lost something with the end of Apple II
manufacture and are hoping that Matsushista, as rumored, or some other
Japanese company will come along and revitalize the II and once again
seek prominence in the school market.
Apple made the perfect educational machine in the GS with its
wonderful color, sound and the capability to run all the old software,
given a 5.25 inch drive. With the GS the school's investment would not
be lost and the technology would celebrate the perfection it achieved
before John Sculley decided to force the Macs down the school market
throat. Well, guess who gagged? First it was the school market and now
it's John, but he has his money....
Will this be a never ending story where the occasional prick will
excite those of us who are involved to document the truth of the
situation? Keep tuned to this channel; the one where it is happening.
