Help with Apple IIGS and Internet connection

A friend has an Apple IIGS computer (one of the first models of the GS)
and would like to use it to connect to Compuserve.  Is there a FAQ
that I can get that would tell her what software and modem she needs
to make the connection?  Is there any public software I could download
for her from an ftp site, and if not, what software would you recommend
for her?  I have called 4 different "Apple retail-type" computer stores
and they were unable to suggest any software or modems.   In fact,
the last store I called said that it was impossible to connect a IIGS
to either Compuserve or the Internet. 

I would really appreciate it if you could respond via email, because
I don't frequent this newsgroup.
