Try the SupraFAXmodem 14.4 driver, at the highest BPS rate it supports.  
(In the Mac version of ProTERM, the init strings for the 14.4 and 28.8 
modems are apparently identical, so I would assume that will work for the 
A2 version as well.  However, the Mac version includes a note that the 
28.8 driver is unsupported because Intrec does not actually have one of 
these modems for testing.  It seems to work fine for me, though.)

As for the Control Panel, it's irrelevant, as ProTERM sets the serial 
port the way it needs it, regardless of how you have it set in the 
Control Panel.
