As David Empson pointed out a little while ago to someone else who asked this
question, this particular phenomenon of AW4 and 5 is not a bug. I think the
main thing to consider here is that the insertion of new fields IS NOT 
INTERFERING WITH YOUR EXISTING LAYOUT. You still have the freedom to move your
new fields to where you want them to be. Consider the way it used to be done
in versions 3 and before, where the addition of so much as a single new field
would wipe out all your existing layouts and reports. I think I'd rather have
it the new way.

Note that in AW5, your new fields don't even appear in the SRL when you first
create them. You actually have to insert them yourself. For my money this is
even better, since you can have multiple SRLs based on labels-style report
formats.
