Apple IIGS network filesharing

I am looking for a layman's technical explanation why a IIGS can not
connect to a Mac running OSX using the AppleShare control panel. I
accept that it doesn't work, but I don't have a good idea why not.

My setup: IIGS running System6.0.1 (has uthernet working) connected
by localtalk cabling to Mac PM6500 running System9.2 and LocalTalk
Bridge connected to iMacG4 running OSX 10.4 (Tiger) through a shared
syslink router. The PM6500 can connect to the G4 using Chooser/
Appleshare. The IIGS can connect to the PM6500 using the AppleShare
control panel. To move files from G4(OSX) to IIGS I copy to PM6500
(OS9) and then copy from PM6500 to IIGS, or vice versa to copy files
from IIGS to G4. This shows that networking is working.

Using the IIGS Appleshare control panel, I can 'see' all the OSX
machines on the network (I have 2 iMac G4/10.4 and a iMacG5 (10.5)).
If I try to connect I get a 'server not responding' message. Only the
OS9 machine supports a connection. As an experiment I also turned on/
enabled Windows filesharing on a G4 since that uses a less robust
password protection.

I am using a modified Appleshare on the IIGS that I think was
modiified for netatalk for cleartext.

What is the reason that the OSX server doesn't respond to the IIGS
Appleshare connect request, whereas OS9 seems fine with both?

TIA,
