Thanks to all who replied - basically the problem is the software doesn't work 
! It seems to me that unless we agreed it didn't go then it should go !! I 
contacted him and he said  ' you must have broken it' and 'no refunds' - so i 
immediately think that he new it didn't go ! He has offered to send files from 
a cracked copy  by email ... which i would accept if i had any way of getting 
those files from this ibmish machine to my apple. so i can only believe he 
meant to rip me off ! I take poorly to this  :) :) and think a visit from a 
friendly policeman would be more effective than flames - it may persuade him 
not to do it again.
