Sure it can and vice versa (on the GS). System7.5 has it built in on the Mac.
Previously there was an init.
 
One way to get Appleworks files over would be to use EgoEd and save them as
an RTF file. Then move them over. That way you'd retain some of the 
formatting, etc...
