Actually, ftp.apple.com only accepts ftp requests from computers
registered with the outside world.  Many sites which have thousands of
computers , and which have changing ip addresses and/or host names, 
only register one or two machines and the rest of the machines 'hide'
behind those front doors in the sense that they are not seen in the
host name lookups.  So for sites like ftp.uu.net, ftp.apple.com and other
such sites, you have to do the ftp from one of those doorway machines.
