Two cheap 14400 baud modems for the Mac or Apple IIgs as of July 1994:
Both are available at Mac WareHouse. Their phone number is (800)
255-6227.
NOTE: These modems are meant for the Macintosh and come with Mac-based
programs, but the modems themselves are compatible with the Apple IIgs.
(They have the same cables and plugs.)
-The Line Link 14.4e, made by Technology Concepts
"The LinkLink 14.4 features v.42bis data compression to transmit your
data at throughput speeds up to 57,600 bps." "The integrity of your
data is preserved using v.42 error correction, so you get error-free
transmition at the highest possible speeds." (Taken directly from Mac
WareHouse's catalog.) I have this model and although I have heard
stories about people having to return defective ones, mine has been
perfect for the last four months and I am very happy with it.
The price I got mine at was $99 for the modem with all necessary
cables plus free software for Mac users. The newest catalo
it with the Fax and Voice upgrade included for $119. (The old prices
were $99 modem, plus $19 and $29 for the two extras.)
-The Magnum 14.4, made by Hayes
Pretty much the same as the LineLink, but this one is made by Hayes,
the leading company in the modem world who set the standards. Prices:
$99 for the modem and optional extra $29 for "Mac Com Center Plus"
software for the Mac.
Also, for any one who A) lives in Connecticut or B) doesn't mind a
big phone bill, they have their own BBS running at 14,400 baud. They
advertise that they have DEMOS for many popular Mac programs including
ClarisWorks and KidPix. If anybody is interested, the number is (203)
855-1155. Use VT-100 (ANSI) or VT-102 emulation, 8,N,1 (data bits,
parity, stop bits) up to 14,400 baud supported
