No, you do not need a hard drive for System 6.01.  But it is nice, and
recommended that you purchase one.  Here is what you should get:

RAMFast SCSI 256K from Sequential Systems (the number for customer orders
escapes me, but call tech support at +1 800-999-1717 and ask for it :))

Any SCSI drive, and you can get a good 200 megger for around $350 or $400 these
days (external) and you'll enjoy it :)

The file compression you are probably thinking about is ShrinkIt!, which is the
standard compression format for the II and GS.  The extensions are .SHK, .BSE,
BXY, just like .SIT is for StuffIt! on the Mac.

GS-ShrinkIt! is available from all FTP sites, GEnie, and many other places,
including all Apple II BBSes.  If you would like, send me a disk and I will
give you GS-ShrinkIt and a few other goodies :)
