As for the SCSI command sets needed to do audio CDs.  All NEC drives
share the same set.  The 38 is listed in my docs as one of them.  Likely
problems are:

1) You must have ROM v3.01e
2) You must either have the RamFAST in slot 7 or have the newer version
   of the driver (v1.1)
3) SCSI id conflect (two devices w/same ID)

Although the drivers are not bug free they do work.  Worked with my 
CDR-25 and a CDR-500 I borrowed.

I've had much greater sucess with a CDA I'm writing to play CDs.
More on that when it is near completion.
