Help Please! Trouble with U.S. Robotics 14,400 baud modem.

       I recently received a U.S. Robotics 14,400 baud modem from a friend
who didn't need it any more.  BUT, when I try to use it, I lose characters
and get TONS of errors when downloading.  I didn't receive any instructions
with the modem, so I have no way of knowing what the dip switch settings on
the back of the modem should set to.

I am using:

ROM 3 Apple IIGS
Hayes compatible modem-to-Macintosh cable (worked fine with my U.S. Robotics
     2400 baud)
Kermit for Apple ][ v3.87
U.S. Robotics 14,400 baud Sportster modem
GS/OS System 6.0.1

Could someone help me with getting this sucker up and running correctly? :)

What should my control panel settings be?
Am I using the wrong kind of cable? (so far, it's been working fine w/2400
     baud modems)
What should the dip switch settings on the back of the modem be?
